Despite a hefty day of travel, we hit the ground running playing the role of caffeinated zombies. We somehow managed to get enough sleep on our flight to keep us lucid for a full day in Auckland. Thanks to a very conveniently located AirBnB in the heart of the city, our major errands including a trek out to the Department of Conservation (which we found is no longer on Quay St., after walking in circles and the assistance of a helpful kiwi) were finished by sundown.
We even managed to swing by a local brewery, Brothers Beer, for a tasting flight, and even enjoyed a tasty ramen dinner at Daikoku!
After planning our first week on the trail and organizing a ride to the trailhead by Kaitaia local (Arthur in the white Mitsubishi truck) we are canceling our stay in Kaitaia and starting the trail a day early with a bus from Auckland and our ride to the cape with Arthur.
This trip is over a year in the making for us from the initial inception of the idea until stepping foot onto the trail. Although we are thrilled it's finally here, this journey will surely have as many ups as it has downs (elevation humor!) This is no normal vacation, and we are both looking forward to it's challenges and joys alike - because what's better than avoiding NYC winter!
